Welcome to RIVER&SOL the gallery of Peter McConchie, fine art photographer and author.
Pete began his photographic career in Milan, Italy in the early nineties, mentored by some of the great fashion and portrait photographers of the time.
He learnt a lot, surfed the world and when the gloss of fashion and travel ended, Pete returned home to Australia with a strong calling for the Wildlands of our beautiful country and its Traditional People.
For more than two decades Pete has been recording in photographs and words, Cultural and Environmental stories. His books are published by Penguin Books, Cambridge University Press, Pan MacMillan, Hardie Grant, & Finch Publishing.
His work is featured in Vogue Living, Home Beautiful, Jardan Furniture and celebrated by many of Australia’s top interior stylists. Two of Pete’s portraits have been shortlisted for the 2017 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery Canberra, which is traveling nationally.
Pete was trained as a traditional photographer in film and through this has a great feeling for natural light. All of the photographs on the River & Sol gallery are recorded on film.
Over the many years that Pete has spent in the bush with the Traditional People of this land he has developed close relationships with them and their Communities. He has been culturally initiated and as a white man is extremely proud of this honour.
Under the leadership of Elders and Community Leaders, Pete has built healing centres, has been a bridge between Indigenous and non-Indigenous healing programs that have led to successful on-going community led programs for both men and women, and has worked at a grassroots level supporting at risk Indigenous youth.
This gallery is an extension of the work Pete passionately believes in: sharing and celebrating the depth and beauty of Indigenous Culture and the Australian environment to which we all belong. A percentage from sales of the prints go directly to the individuals represented in the photographs and to community programs.
