Living on Boonwurrung Country (Mornington Peninsula) with Family, Pete McConchie  began his photographic journey in Milan in the late 80’s assisting some of the great fashion and portrait photographers of that time. And for almost a decade he worked between London and New York shooting reportage and portraiture specialising in natural light.

With a deep inner calling Pete returned home to the First Nations People of Australia and the landscapes and ecosystems we value so dearly. As an internationally published author of 6 photographic books, he went on to found the charities Culture is Life an organisation dedicated to the prevention of Indigenous youth suicide and self harm. And later, Traditional Cultural Practices focusing on supporting Indigenous Elders build cultural identity (as a safeguard) within the youth of their Communities.

Pete continues close friendships with Elders and their tribal groups across the Country. And has been through ceremony and Cultural teachings rarely given to non Indigenous people, enabling the foundation and depth of much of his personal work.

Pete has written words from country to accompany his photographs. They tell of a rich journey into the metaphysical and give defining insight into the oldest living Culture on Earth.

A good day out Pete with eldest son River, 2025.
