'Wild Honey'

Wawa (Brother) took me into the Arnhem Land forest hunting. He noticed a solitary bee and we followed it through the forest for a long way, over fallen trees under low forest canopy by now I had lost sight of it. Wawa pointed to a solitary branch of a tree. I was new to Country and Wawa told me to put bug repellent on before he chopped the branch open for wild honey, he said, "the bees would angry" and so I did. Straight away his laughter echoed through that beautiful Arnhem Land forest telling me they were native bees and had no sting. We travelled long and hard for that honey giving our strength to the forest, what we couldn't carry back tot he community we ate right then and there. What a wonderful feeling it was to share that wild honey.

Family and Community in this part of the Country call each other by who they are in relationship to each other, not by name. So I call my Brother "Wawa" in Yolngu language and he calls me the same.
